Breast Reduction with Dr. Ronald Espinoza

Some women develop breasts that are overly large or heavy. This can lead to back and neck pain, as well as difficulty enjoying certain activities. A breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the breasts that can help alleviate this pain and allow women to participate in more active lifestyles.

Before & After Breast Reduction

What Is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of the breasts and lift them higher on the chest.

Breasts that are too large can put a severe strain on the neck, back, and shoulders. They can also get in the way of exercise, sports, or other activities. A breast reduction allows women the opportunity to find better fitting clothes, enjoy exercise more, and get the most out of the pastimes they enjoy.

Reasons to Choose a Breast Reduction

The reasons for choosing a breast reduction are unique to each individual. Some of the most common reasons women consider breast reduction surgery include:
  • VPain in the shoulder, neck, or back
  • VDifficulty finding clothes that fit properly
  • VBreasts that are not proportional to their frame
  • VSize or weight of the breasts interfering with activities

Your Surgical Experience

Most breast reduction surgeries are performed using general anesthesia and take between 1 and 3 hours to complete. This is typically an outpatient procedure that allows patients to return home the same afternoon.

The surgery begins with the surgeon creating an anchor or keyhole-shaped incision around the areola. Through the incision, the surgeon is able to remove excess tissue, fat, and skin from the breasts. Once this is complete, the nipple will be repositioned to appear more lifted and symmetrical with the new shape of the breast. The tissue of the breasts will then be further contoured, which may sometimes be completed using liposuction. Finally, the incisions will be closed with sutures.

Recovery after Breast Reduction

After the surgery is completed, patients should expect to recover for 7 to 10 days. You may be required to wear a surgical bra over gauze bandages or an elastic bandage during this time. The surgical bra will be worn for several weeks after surgery to aid in the healing process and diminish swelling.

Most patients experience some discomfort or pain for the first several days following surgery. This is often amplified during moments of activity or movement. Your surgeon will ensure you have medication to ease these symptoms and keep you comfortable.

Scarring with Breast Reduction

Many patients are concerned with scarring during their breast reduction procedure. Dr. Espinoza takes every precaution to minimize scarring as much as possible. If only liposuction is required, scarring will be minimal. For others, stitches are often placed vertically around the areola, and in some cases, along the crease of the breast. Before your procedure, Dr. Espinoza will discuss your scar potential in order to give you a realistic expectation of the results.

Your Results

The results of your breast reduction will take several months to settle fully. Right away after surgery, you may feel the reduced weight of your new breasts. Over the next few weeks, you will experience some swelling and bruising, making it difficult to see the results. As this swelling resolves, your breasts will settle into their final position.
