Liposuction

For many men and women, excess fat can cause a great deal of frustration, especially when it won’t respond to diet and exercise. Liposuction is a surgical procedure that can address these pockets of excess fat.
Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures today and is performed by Dr. Espinoza in his New York City office. It can be used on many areas of the body to help remove fat and create a more contoured physique.

Who Is a Candidate?

Good candidates for liposuction are those in good overall health who have localized pockets of excess fat. This fat may create unfortunate contours that have not responded to weight loss methods such as diet and exercise.

To determine if you are a candidate for liposuction, schedule a consultation with Dr. Espinoza. During your consultation, he will review your medical history and discuss your goals and expectations for the procedure. He can also recommend other procedures or treatments to complement liposuction and help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Areas Targeted With Liposuction

Liposuction can be used throughout the body to remove fat and create a more defined shape. Some of the most common areas for liposuction include:
  • VAbdomen
  • VArms
  • VBack
  • VButtocks
  • VCalves and ankles
  • VCheeks and chin
  • VFlanks
  • VThighs

How Liposuction Is Performed

Liposuction is performed using IV sedation. This will keep you relaxed and comfortable during the surgery. The length of the procedure will vary based on the areas being treated. For most patients, a liposuction session takes between one and three hours. Liposuction on its own is an outpatient procedure, but if you are combining it with other, more extensive treatments, you may require an overnight stay.
The procedure starts with small incisions that will be strategically placed along the treated area. Then a small tube or cannula will be inserted through the incision. Once inside, the cannula will be moved through the fat tissue to break up the cells. Then they are then suctioned out, and the incisions are sutured closed.

Recovery from Liposuction

Patients should plan to recover from liposuction for one to two weeks. After your surgery, a compression garment will be placed over the area. This helps promote healing and reduce swelling. You may experience some temporary bruising, swelling, soreness, or numbness in or around the area. This should completely resolve on its own but may take several months.

Most patients can return to work as well as their regular social activities within a week or less. More strenuous activities, including heavy lifting or exercise, should be avoided for 2 to 4 weeks. Before your surgery, Dr. Espinoza will provide you with complete recovery guidelines.

Temporary bruising, swelling, soreness, burning sensations, and numbness may occur. This should completely resolve on its own, over a period of a few months. Patients generally feel well enough to return to work within a week or less. Strenuous activity should be postponed for two to four weeks.
