What is a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery can help women who feel their breasts lack volume, symmetry, or shape improve their figure. The procedure is performed using an implant made of silicone or saline filling and can help create a more contoured physique. This procedure, also known as an augmentation mammoplasty, is performed by Dr. Espinoza in his Manhattan office.

What is the cost?

The cost of breast augmentation varies depending on a number of factors, including which type of breast augmentation is performed, the type of implant selected, and the complexity of the procedure.

Breast augmentation prices generally range between $6000-$15,000. After your consultation, Dr. Espinoza will provide a detailed surgical plan, which includes the exact price for your customized breast augmentation.

Am I a Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

Candidates for breast augmentation are women in good overall health looking to improve the size or shape of their breasts. Ideal candidates will be looking to make lasting changes to their breasts.

To ensure your skin heals properly, patients should be non-smokers or be willing to stop smoking for a month prior to and following their surgery.

In order to determine if you are a candidate for breast enlargement in New York, you should schedule a consultation with Dr. Espinoza. During your consultation, he will discuss what you hope to achieve from the procedure and help you select the best implant type and size.

Dr. Espinoza can recommend if breast augmentation is the right procedure for you or recommend another procedure as necessary.

What Breast Augmentation
Surgery Can and Can’t Do

What breast augmentation surgery can’t do:

Even the best breast augmentation in New York does not correct breasts that severely sag or droop. A breast lift may be required in conjunction with a breast augmentation for sagging breasts to look fuller and lifted.

A breast lift can often be done simultaneously with your augmentation, but it does require a separate operation in some cases. Dr. Espinoza can help determine if a breast lift is necessary and if the two procedures can be combined.

What breast augmentation can do:

  • VIncrease fullness and projection of your breasts
  • VImprove the balance of breast and hip contours
  • VEnhance your self-image and self-confidence
  • VBe used for breast reconstruction after mastectomy or injury

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient procedure and takes roughly 2 hours to perform. You will be under IV sedation, ensuring you will remain comfortable and in a twilight sleep for the duration of the procedure. If you combine your breast augmentation with a breast lift, you may require general anesthesia.

The exact steps for inserting the implant will vary based on your anatomy and the type of implant you choose. The incision can be placed at the breast crease or around the areola. In both locations, your scar will be well-concealed.

Through the incision, Dr. Espinoza can create a pocket below the breast tissue or pectoral muscle for the implant. Once the implant is placed inside your breast, it is centered, and the incisions are closed using stitches.

Once the surgery is complete, gauze bandages or other dressings may be applied over the incisions. You will also be given a special sports bra to wear during the healing process that closes in the front.

Types of Breast Implants

There are two types of breast implants commonly used today, saline and silicone. Both are safe and effective choices and come in several shapes, sizes, and textures. Dr. Espinoza will walk you through your implant options and make a recommendation based on your preferences and goals.

Saline Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with sterile saltwater. They do not come pre-filled and are filled once the silicone shell has been placed inside. This allows the shape to be customized to your unique anatomy. Should the implant shell leak, the implant will collapse, and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.

Saline breast implants provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel and are FDA-approved for augmentation in women aged 18 or older.

Silicone Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with silicone gel. The gel is designed to feel like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell or escape into the breast implant pocket. A leaking implant filled with silicone gel will not collapse.

If you choose silicone breast implants for surgery in Manhattan, you may need to visit your plastic surgeon regularly to make sure the implants are functioning properly. An ultrasound or MRI screening can assess the condition of breast implants. Silicone breast implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women aged 22 or older.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Your recovery from breast augmentation should last about one week. During your recovery, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings and an elastic bandage or support bra to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. After the surgery, you will be taken into a recovery area for close monitoring. You may be permitted to go home when you are stable for discharge, which is typically after an hour or so.

You will be given specific post-operative instructions for your recovery and a follow-up appointment with Dr. Espinoza. You may also receive medications or a prescription, but many plastic surgeons prescribe postoperative medications in advance. Your prescribed medications may include pain pills and an antibiotic to prevent infection.

Will there be scars?

Incision placement depends on the size and type of implants chosen, your physical contours, and other factors. Incisions are made very precisely by Dr. Espinoza to ensure that the scars are as minimal as possible.

Scars will be in the following possible areas:

  • VA line under the natural crease of the breasts
  • VIn the natural folds of the skin in the belly button or armpits
  • VAround the areola

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation?

Most patients can breastfeed after a breast augmentation. Milk production can sometimes be a problem, as nipple sensation may be diminished, and nipple stimulation is a factor in producing milk. If you desire to retain the ability to breastfeed, be sure to talk with Dr. Espinoza ahead of time so that he can plan for this as a part of your procedure.

What kind of anesthesia will be used

Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia. In some cases, it will be performed with a local anesthetic and IV sedation.

Can my breast augmentation be combined with other procedures?

Breast augmentation is commonly combined with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck, breast lift, brow lift, liposuction, and others, to help achieve a more sculpted, attractive physique.

Are there risks?

As any surgery does, breast augmentation carries risks that include bleeding, pain, loss of sensation, blood clots, infection, scarring, anesthesia risks, and others. In addition to these risks, breast implant surgery risks also include implant shifting, failure, hardening, or rupture.
